Day 4: Ordering numbers
Building the SnowWoman: Number Order Activity
Organizing Trucks and Cranes
1. Introduction:
Explain that trucks and cranes are numbered for organization, and workers put them in number order at the end of each workday.
2. Parts of an Open Number Line:
Review the components of an open number line.
Open Number Line: A snapshot of numbers in order.
End Arrows: Indicates that the numbers continue.
Tick Marks: Lines that mark specific numbers.
Intervals: The space between each tick mark (ones, fives, tens).
3. Modeling with Trucks:
Model putting a group of trucks in number order on the open number line.
4. Verbal Comparison:
Verbally compare each number, starting with the smallest.
Example:
Truck 1 has the smallest number, followed by Truck 5, then Truck 9.
5. Group Participation:
Encourage students to participate in placing the trucks in number order on the open line.
6. Discuss Number Relationships:
Discuss the relationships between the numbers, emphasizing the importance of starting with the smallest.
7. Repeat with Cranes:
Extend the activity by repeating the process with cranes, reinforcing the concept of number order.
8. Reflection:
Reflect on the importance of organization and number order in construction activities.
Building the SnowWoman involves not just creativity but also organization. Putting trucks and cranes in number order helps workers efficiently manage the construction site. Understanding the parts of an open number line and verbally comparing numbers enhances mathematical thinking. 🚚🏗️🔢
