Day 1: Decomposing Numbers

SnowWoman Construction

Comparing Snow Loads

1. Understanding Proportional Models:

Building a SnowWoman involves comparing snow loads from different dump trucks. We can use proportional models like sticks bundles and base ten blocks.

Example:

🚚1: 37 loads

🚚2: 17 loads

2. Decomposing Numbers:

Break down each number to understand its parts. Start with the largest place value.

Example:

37 Decomposed:

3 tens + 7 ones

17 Decomposed:

1 ten + 7 ones

3. Comparing Place Values:

Good mathematicians always begin by comparing with the largest place value.

Example:

37 is greater than 17 because:

3 tens > 1 ten

(Focus on the tens place first!)

4. Proportional Models:

Visualize the comparison using sticks bundles and/or base ten blocks. This helps us see the proportional differences in the snow loads.

5. Reasoning:

Understanding why and how the numbers are different enhances our mathematical thinking.

*Remember, when comparing numbers, break them down into parts and focus on the largest place value first. This helps us make sense of the proportional differences in snow loads and construct the tallest SnowWoman! ❄️👧🏽👍🏼
